Each year, Reel Islington puts on an annual film festival, Reel Islington Screenings, showcasing the work of established and up-and-coming filmmakers from Islington and North London. It invites professional and amateur filmmakers to show their films, make new films and discuss their experiences. It is held in July, during Holloway Arts Festival.
One of the highlights of the 2009 programme was an afternoon of film at one of London's oldest cinemas, the Holloway Odeon, on Sunday 28th June. There were short local films, Islington Reels, followed by Two-Minute Films, where the audience helped our panel of industry professionals decide which three films would win a £100 cash prize. There was also a screening of the exhilarating Oscar-winning documentary, Man On Wire, which tells the incredible story of Philippe Petite's death defying tightrope walk between New York's Twin Towers, followed by a Q&A session with the film's producer, Simon Chinn. More films were showed at the Big Day Out in Whittington Park where there was a screening of short films by independent filmmakers. There was also a workshop, Make a Film in a Day, run by established industry professionals to help nurture budding local film-makers.
Reel Islington also took part in Halloween in Holloway 2009 with Reel Islington Screamings - a frighteningly brilliant line up of films for Halloween!
