Laurie Lipton's Islington Images

Laurie Lipton's Islington Images Exhibition ran during September and October 2006 at Manor Gardens Library, N7.

Laurie Lipton was born in New York. She was the first person to graduate from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pennsylvania with a Fine Arts Degree in Drawing (with honours). She has lived in Holland, Belgium, Germany and France and has made her home in London since 1986.

Islington Images was inspired by the North London people and landscape that Laurie encountered on her daily rambles. She says: "Little instances, brief moments, flashes of daily life caught my eye, and I tried to encapsulate them in all their detail and poignancy. The two hairless men in the barber shop, the man who runs the newsagent's, the lush Aladdin's cave filled with fruit and veg..... all of these vignettes were little peeks into an area of London that is a thriving, multicultural part of the capital that a lot of the tourists unfortunately don't get to see."

The project was funded by Arts Council England.

Two of Laurie’s drawings will have a permanent home at Whittington Park Community Centre. To see more of Lipton's drawings please visit www.laurielipton.com
