The Tapestry Project
Our Work > Crafts > The Tapestry Project
This was a unique intergenerational project that started in April 2007. Over 100 people of all ages from Holloway and the surrounding areas took part in the creation of a beautiful woven tapestry. The tapestry was completed in October 2007 and is now on display at the Whittington Park Community Centre.
Drop-in tapestry-weaving sessions, led by local artist Melanie McKennell, were held at Whittington Park Community Centre and in the Park itself. Other participating groups and venues included:
- African Swahiliphone Refugee Project
- Archway Library
- Grafton Primary School
- Holloway Arts Festival Big Day Out in Whittington Park
- One O’Clock Club
- Over 55’s Club
As part of the project, photographer Ruth Corney also documented the making of the tapestry.
Rowan Arts produced the project in partnership with Whittington Park Community Association, with support from Islington Children’s Services.
“It was a real joint effort. From children to senior citizens, people will be able to look at the tapestry and feel proud that they have created a part of it"
- Melanie McKennell, project leader
Here's what some of the participants said:
“I LOVED the colours!!”
“Very relaxing and therapeutic”
“Gets local children and adults working together”
“Once you get the hang of it it’s easy and fun”
